Kids In Business - Cash-Smart Kids YouTube Video Competition
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe via e-mail. Thanks for visiting!
Well, the big day is here!
Today we begin the global search for two entrepreneurs under sixteen to be featured in the 2008 Charity Book Project.
The two winners will be profiled alongside big names like Ben Casnocha, who started a software business at 13, and was CEO of a Silicon Valley start-up by seventeen.
Runners up will also get exposure, with their names and the URLs of their websites listed in the book, and their stories being told in more detail in various marketing activities around the launch of the book.
If you know anyone under sixteen who has a business - or is about to start one - this is a golden opportunity to kick that business to a new level!
Publicity, new clients, mentors, business opportunities - so much can come of just a little bit of exposure, as we have found with my daughter Rachael’s business.
So, how do you put your hand up for some of these goodies?
Just make a 2-minute video and put it on YouTube, tagged “cash smart kids”. (Make sure you read the instructions below, especially the part about getting your parents’ permission.)
Parents, if you want to get your child started in a business, this is the best opportunity you will have! The excitement of the competition will help them keep focused on the tasks at hand. If you’re not sure how to get them going, pop over to Cash-Smart Kids, join up, send me an email, and I’ll personally help you to meet the deadline.
YouTube Competition Rules
What You Need To Do
Make a video, 2 minutes or less in length (penalties will apply for over-long videos)
- Start the video with “Hi, my name is …….. and I am a Cash-Smart Kid!”
- Include the following information:
- Your age
- The city where you live
- How old you were when you started your first business
- All about your current business
- Anything about your business that will impress us
- Upload it to YouTube
- Tag it with “cash smart kids” (this is how we will FIND your entry, so be SURE you do this!)
When The Competition Starts
NOW! Kids are already working on their videos.
We will review the videos at YouTube every week or so, and choose finalists from each group. If you get in early, you will have a better chance to be a finalist than if you wait until the last week, when everyone is rushing to get in before the deadline.
When The Competition Ends
The competition will end when we reach agreement with a publisher and start finalising the first draft of the book. This will be some time in May. (Update - good news! The publishers want to give you extra time, so the competition will now end in July.)
We will give at least a week’s notice when we close the competition - to find out when it happens, add your email address to the Charity Book updates list by registering at www.raisingentrepreneurs.org, and/or check the blog here every Monday for updates.
If you have questions about the competition, post them as comments on any Monday blog post, and they will be answered ASAP.
While The Competition Is Running
If your video is good, you will see it posted on the blog for all the world to see! Whether or not you make it into the book, the publicity will be priceless.
Again, early entries will have a better chance of being featured - do it now!
Terms And Conditions
- You must be under the age of sixteen to submit an entry. Proof of age will be required from the winners, and if a selected winner is found to be sixteen or over, they will be disqualified and the first runner-up will take their place.
- Your parents must know you are entering and agree to allow you to be profiled in the book if you win.
- To be considered, videos must be uploaded to YouTube and tagged “cash smart kids”, and must meet the requirements laid out in the section marked “What You Need To Do”.
- You may make multiple videos, but if you only have one business, only one video will be considered for inclusion. If you have lots of businesses, go ahead and make a new video for each one, and they will all be considered.
- By submitting a video to this competition, you agree to allow the promoters (Cash-Smart Kids, Peter Economy, and the chosen publishing company) to use your video in their marketing activities, whether or not you are one of the two winners.
- Judging will take place on the nominated date as advised in the blog at RaisingEntrepreneurs.org. The judges will be Jenny Ford and Peter Economy. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. The winners will be notified via a blog post at RaisingEntrepreneurs.org, on the Monday following the closing date of the competition.
- This is a competition of skill, not a game of chance.
- The two winners will be profiled in the 2008 Charity Book, working title “Raising Entrepreneurs”.
- If you are unable to make a video submission, you may make a written submission, accompanied by images, by creating a Hub at www.HubPages.com. To be considered, your Hub must be tagged “cash smart kids”, and must contain all the information required in a video submission.
- Your business may be just a business idea at the moment - you can still submit an entry, but preference will be given to businesses that are actually up and running on the day the competition closes.

This is fantastic. As a retired financial planner with over 30 years experience in the financial world we need this type of education to get our kids knowledgeable in the “money world”.
So many kids leave school, go to University or College and do not have a clue about budgeting, investing, how to buy a car without being ripped off, how to get a personal loan, how to invest, or what does compounding their investments mean? Most of all they don’t know how to save the stuff!!. We need to give more education to our kids in this area. The problem we have in this world is that the only people that want to teach them want money in exchange and then this removes all “objectivity” for our kids.

You’re right, Tony - kids are much more vigilant about the money they earn themselves than they are with money they are given. When they understand what it takes to earn money, they start to take an interest in hanging on to it for the future!

Hi guys, I was wondering what are the videos being judged on? Also are they to be of yourself speaking or can they just be edited affects with a voice over?
My business is http://www.pryde-design.co.uk which specializes in providing professional web design services at low prices. What you think of the site and the answers would be great thanks.
